Over the past few years, Thom Browne has been quietly making steps into the world of homewares, collaborating with the likes of Baccarat, Christofle, and Haviland. For his first outing during Milan Design Week with Frette, however, the designer decided to make a bolder statement, channeling the theatrical energy of his runway shows into one of the week’s most memorable presentations. As the Salone del Mobile design fair opens its doors in the suburb of Rho this week, it served as the smoke signal that Milan Design Week has officially begun.
When will I have access to the lectures and assignments?
Menswear is often overlooked in fashion education, but understanding how to style clothing for the male form is a necessary skill for any fashion designer seeking well-rounded training. Students in this class will learn how to layer men’s clothing, choose fabrics and materials when creating a look, and style outfits for a broad range of purposes, including editorial photoshoots, runway shows, and everyday wear. If you want the expertise, experience, and confidence to coordinate outfits for men, provide image consulting, and put together flattering, trendsetting ensembles, you can’t miss this course.

By 1976, von Furstenberg was selling 25,000 of them a week. Copycats followed, and when wrap dresses were suddenly everywhere, von Furstenberg’s business experienced a significant lull—but unlike many of her peers, she weathered the storm and made a veritable comeback in the early 2000s. The exciting thing to other young women was that Hamnett’s anti-nuke politics put her firmly amongst the rising cohort of post-punk feminism. The press dubbed her customers, swathed in their voluminous deconstructed Comme fashions, “the crows.” But no matter—these birds knew that there was true liberation lurking in these unusual fashions.
More From Our Brands
I grew up in a very rural community, and there was no fashion or sense of fashion whatsoever. My mom was a potter and my dad was musical and had very good style, and that sort of inadvertently affected me. I feel like they are responsible for my super minimally utilitarian aesthetic. A lot of really talented people are coming out of L.A. That are wanting to be a community, and that are positive and giving each other advice and help.
We would do fashion reports for each other—Halston was my first report—and we just were very clearly all going to do our own creative thing. So, as I was working there, I was taking my sewing class and started making clothes. I would get coffee and, standing behind me in line, they’d say, "Hey, where you’d get that dress? Could you make one for me?" I’d throw out a number for how much it would cost, and then I would have a customer. Then a stylist friend said I should make a book of pieces and he’ll bring it to Paris. From there, my very first order was from Colette, and that was the moment I just saw an opportunity and I took it. Both of my grandmas had fun with clothes and were really big on dressing up.

There are different lines of work for designers in the fashion industry. Fashion designers that work full-time for one fashion house, as 'in-house designers', own the designs and may either work alone or as a part of a design team. Freelance designers who work for themselves, sell their designs to fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing manufacturers.

Is the land of sweatshirts and t-shirts, and I found a factory in L.A. And met them, and it was a really positive experience. I brought it to a dye house, and there was so much possibility that I didn’t really know existed. There are so many factories in L.A., and a number of them are out of work because so many people aren’t producing here. And also my brand felt like it resonated so much with being from California, and I felt proud of producing in California. So when I moved here, I had already moved my production here.

Notably, Professor Castillo is also spearheading the production of the event alongside her ARTX400 Fashion Show Promotion course this semester. The clothes for sale right now on the Jawara Alleyne website include a black-and-white striped painted button-down, an ombré knit maxi skirt, rainbow-hued beaded jewelry, and made-to-order tops like the ones Rihanna has worn.
